In vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer into the uterus: the fundamental steps of IVF-ET are oocyte collection, their extracorporeal fertilisation and the subsequent transfer of the embryos developed in vitro (in a laboratory) into the mother’s uterus.

Insemination is performed by bringing each collected oocyte into contact with a certain number of motile and morphologically normal sperm in a small amount of culture medium.

The fertilisation steps take place spontaneously, albeit under in vitro conditions.

IVF-ET can only be used when the seminal fluid has normal or slightly altered parameters, in order to obtain a high fertilisation rate.
