TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) is the direct surgical collection of spermatozoa from the testicle and is performed in cases of obstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia.

The technique involves a small incision in the scrotum to allow access to the testicle. A small amount of testicular tissue (biopsy) is then removed. Sperm collected in this way can be used for both the assisted fertilisation procedure (ICSI) and cryopreservation.

This technique can be performed under general or local anaesthesia.

It is usually performed in cases of male infertility involving a complete absence of sperm in the seminal fluid (azoospermia).
